What I Love in my Bedroom + Order Makeover: Before & After’s

September 21, 2010

Yesterday, you got to meet our order makeover winner, Danielle.  Today, see our Before & After photos. {And further down, check out a few of my bedroom favorites!}

Our focus: clearing the clutter in the bedroom…

And now:  the A F T E R S !

Many of us have a “catch all” space for everything not having a home. For Danielle, this space was her bedroom.  Shortly, she’ll be putting her house on the market so we focused on getting rid of the clutter.

We spent time purging {taking EVERYTHING out}, sorting what remained, then deciding what should be kept where {taking into consideration the move – things that could be stored and things that needed to be accessed easily}.

“Stuff” can be moved out of sight {under the bed or in a closet}, but unless it’s done in a thoughtful way, it will continue to bring us stress. Same with our to-do’s:  we can write them down {shifting from our head to paper} but if we aren’t using a reliable system, our mind won’t let go – it knows  chances are good that some of these things will slip through the cracks.

After the move, Danielle will be finding better a better place {OUTside the bedroom!} for the family computer / desk, but for now we focused on simply getting the clutter under control.  {A great first step with anything you do!}

After streamlining, it’s time for the fun part!  Making the bedroom a fabulous place to escape! A place you can’t wait to get to … and don’t won’t to leave! What do YOU love in your room?  Here are a few things I love…

What I love … in my own bedroom:

  • comfy blanket
  • reading light {I have a reading light I can turn on when my husband is ready to turn off.  It – the book light AND husband : ) accompanies me when traveling, as well.}
  • pleasant alarm clock {the worst is to have to wake up to the sound of a dreadful alarm! Not a way I want to start my day… I now use my iPhone when I need to wake up before the sun is up.}
  • good books / magazines {I love having a stack of really good reads within reach}
  • quiet, dark, cool! {remove – or at least cover – digital lights (from dvr’s / computer / phone); and PETS – lovable, yes! good sleeping partners, not always! – are a big reason some of us don’t get enough of that really good deep sleep.}
  • fresh flowers {a treat I don’t have often enough. Every now & then, I’ll place a tiny vase with a flower in each of my boys’ bedrooms – they think it’s one of nicest things!}
  • great smelling sheets {along with a higher thread count CORRECTION! see my 2nd comment @ end of blog!!:  it may make it that much harder to get out of them in the morning, but as much time as you spend in this one place – it’s worth a little extra $ and care}
  • my favorite mementos {my bedside table drawer could appear to some (not that anyone needs to be snooping in another’s boudoir!  Privacy please) as a junk drawer.  To me, however, it contains some of my favorite things.}

For more ideas, check out Bedroom Tips from Design Team Nickey Kehoe {Apartment Therapy’s site} – click here{Funny comment about whether or not to keep family pics in the bedroom!  I guess that’s for each of us to decide!}

Thank you, Danielle, for allowing me to share what we did with my readers!  Soon, I’ll share a few of the neat things I learned from Danielle!

    BTW, I love Seventh Generation’s blue eucalyptus & lavendar + sometimes I’ll use Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day dryer sheets in Geranium.

    Correction to my “high thread count” for sheets comment!!! Just heard Oprah Show’s Nate Berkus (he now has his own show) say to buy the nicest sheets you can afford but DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO THE THREAD COUNT!!! The “thread count number” has been turned into a marketing scheme. Look at the QUALITY of the cotton and for TIGHTER WEAVE. {Nate has had 1,000 thread count sheets fall apart after 4 washings!}

    You did a great job in the bedroom! It’s amazing how clutter can mask the beauty of rooms, isn’t it? I’m all for simplicity, and no clutter 🙂

    Thank you, Cristina! Streamlining is become a big part of “organizing” for me. Not just in rooms, but in life! Soon, I’ll share an INCREDIBLE blog I’ve been following that has helped me do this. Thank you for your comment!!
